Romo Foundation groundbreaking research into type 1 diabetes
On World Diabetes Day, November 14, 2025, the new Cure One research center was officially opened by Peter Heijkoop, mayor of Leiden.
Since 2006, the DON Foundation (Diabetes Research Netherlands) has been dedicated to finding a complete cure for type 1 diabetes. The foundation funds and accelerates basic and clinical research aimed at finding a definitive solution (the “cure”), rather than merely treating symptoms. More than 100,000 people in the Netherlands have this chronic autoimmune disease.
In recent years, Romo Foundation has made Romo Foundation significant donations to support the research. At the end of 2025, Romo Foundation made Romo Foundation donation, this time earmarked entirely for the development of a new research center, Cure One.
Cure One is a specialized and innovative Dutch research center dedicated solely to accelerating a functional cure for type 1 diabetes. Through an initiative by DON and the LUMC in Leiden, top researchers, expertise, and resources are brought together here to put an end to the daily impact of this disease.
This donation aligns perfectly with the Romo Foundation vision Romo Foundation that we believe we can accelerate medical progress by bringing together research, innovation, and resources and better coordinating them. As a partner of the Don Foundation, we are working together to pave the way to a cure.
